Cigarette-smoke infused life

The suspect chain-smoked out of the hospital room window. A nurse came in for his blood pressure, and to castigate him half-heartedly for the endless burned tobacco wafting into the neighboring patient's room. He was overweight and smoked too much but he wasn't really ill. A prolonged stay for a routine examination had made the hospital a refuge. He lived out his sliver of freedom watching television, smoking and drinking red wine, as though it could be his last drink, his last smoke -- he might never get out again.
