Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's Campaign Launch
It's a hot Saturday in September and swarms of people fill the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in downtown Monrovia for the Unity Party's campaign launch. "It's the rainy season but God is pleased so the sun is shining," a supporter says. Mostly young people sit on the astroturf eating boiled eggs and swigging water and beer. Many hold signs with the ubiquitous slogan "Monkey still working. Let baboon wait small."
"Education, da my area! Information, da my area! Building schools, road and bridges, da my area!" President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says, borrowing the refrain of a Nigerian pop song and swiveling her hips on a stage in the center of the crowd.
