Falkland Islands Referendum: Day 1

History diverges in Argentina and the Falkland Islands over the 1833 arrival of British sailors following a gaucho-led mutiny, the quarrel at the heart of the present-day sovereignty dispute. In government multimedia campaigns, Argentina depicts the British as pirates robbing them of their rightful inheritance after winning independence from Spain, while the Falkland Islands remember Britain as its rescuer. A two-day referendum in Port Stanley, where most of the 2,563 islanders live, commenced Sunday and is expected to show Falkland voters' resounding wish to maintain their political status as a British Overseas Territory. A census taken last September showed 62 percent of the population identifying itself as a native Falklands islander, and referendum polls show more than 90 percent of voters answering "yes" to the status quo, with four percent stating its preference for Chilean nationality.
