Learning Curve

The women I work with are in their 20s and 30s, which means most had their educations violently disrupted by war. Most have college degrees, but I'm not sure what degrees mean in a place where schools were closed for 14 years. I find they are often not receptive. Aside from when they're in a packed yellow taxi riding into Central Monrovia, they don't listen to the radio, even those who work at radio stations, because there is no electricity at night. They don't read books because books are expensive. Newspapers here can only teach them how not to write. Sometimes it's hard to discern any impact.
