Red Beret

Commander Angelou of the Forces Nouvelles March 17 on the Liberian-Ivorian border.
We met the rebel Commander Angelou. He was wearing a red beret, a camo t-shirt and an AK-47. He was slight and unsmiling. He said the FN rebels, who had barricaded a bridge connecting Liberia with Ivory Coast, were fighting for freedom. On his gun strap read: "Combatant de la Libertad." The rebels told Liberian security forces last week that anyone who crossed would be executed. The rebels said they closed the area so that Liberian mercenaries couldn't pass over. According to the Liberian commander of the emergency response unit, the only armed police unit in the country since a massive disarmament campaign, some 700 Liberians have already crossed over to fight.
